VFX UV Holographic Prints (Spot Foil & Raised Texture)

Create selective holographic effects, colored metallic details and raised clear textures with Uproar’s VFX UV printing. We print white ink, color and clear varnish directly onto specialty vinyl, giving artists control over where the material shows through and how the surface catches the light.

More than holographic

Explore 80+ specialty vinyl options—82 currently available—including holographic, color-shift, Florentine gold and glow-in-the-dark effects. Uproar has offered VFX printing to Artist Alley vendors and creative communities since early 2021.

Print sizes and sets

Smaller sizes are sold in sets where shown in the size selector. These sets use the width of the vinyl roll efficiently and reduce unused material. Review the number of prints in your selected size before ordering; contact us if you want to combine designs within a set.

Prepare your artwork

Use separate White, Color and Varnish layers, with masks controlling the printed areas. A test print is recommended for evaluating how the inks interact with your chosen material. Professional prepress setup is available at $30 per 30-minute increment when your files need preparation.

How the layers create the effect

UV light cures the printed ink on the surface. Uproar builds the image in layers on specialty vinyl, allowing the material and printed areas to work together.

• Substrate: supplies the holographic, metallic, color-shift or other specialty appearance.
• White: creates an opaque base where you want to cover the substrate.
• Color: prints over white for a solid base, or directly on the substrate to create colored visual effects.
• Varnish: adds clear spot gloss or raised texture in selected areas.

For example, yellow printed over a silver-colored substrate can create a gold-like appearance. The result is a printed visual effect, not a layer of precious metal. Use a test print to evaluate the chosen combination.

Before you start

Save a separate production copy of your artwork and keep your original design. Use raster artwork at 300–600 PPI at the final printed size, with Adobe RGB (1998) or PrintWide2020 embedded.

This service supports prints up to 24 inches wide. White, color and clear-varnish layers interact with the selected specialty vinyl to create selective effects.

1. White layer

Place an opaque white fill at the bottom of the layer stack. Use a black-and-white mask to control where the white ink prints: white reveals the ink, and black hides it to expose the substrate. Where neither white nor color ink should print, apply the corresponding mask to the Color layer as well.

To reduce a visible white halo around fine details, make a carefully controlled inward adjustment to the white mask. Check the result at the final print scale and confirm small details with a test print.

2. Color layer

Place your artwork above the White layer. Color printed over white has a solid base; color printed directly on the substrate interacts with its appearance. A white area in the Color layer deposits no CMYK color ink. Prepare the production layer in Normal blend mode.

3. Varnish layer

Place the Varnish layer at the top. Use any clearly visible solid color on screen, with a grayscale mask defining the printed areas and varnish amount. The physical varnish is clear. A black mask hides varnish, white applies the full amount, and gray applies an intermediate amount.

Varnish can deepen the appearance of dark colors and create raised texture. Keep the distinction between varnish opacity and the percentage of black in the mask clear when preparing your file.

4. Save the production file

Keep Varnish, Color and White as three separate layers, in that top-to-bottom order, with their masks. Set blend modes to Normal; do not flatten the document into one layer. Resolve unsupported layer effects within the appropriate layer without merging the three print channels.

Custom test prints

Custom test prints are produced to order. Contact us for pricing and the appropriate size. To evaluate overall color economically, print at 25% of the original width and height—for example, a 24 × 36-inch design becomes 6 × 9 inches. To examine critical details, combine selected areas at their intended print scale on one test-wedge sheet.

Plan your schedule

Allow time for file review, test printing, adjustments, production and shipping. Ask us for a project-specific estimate, especially before convention season. Production begins after full payment and your approval of the final print-ready files. Contact us before placing a rush order; rush services are quoted and paid separately.

Display and selling guidance

Display a sample under suitable lighting so customers can see the selective effects and raised varnish. Use VFX UV Print, Selective Holographic Print or Raised-Texture Art Print, and identify the chosen material effect.

For preorders or post-event fulfillment, record accurate recipient, shipping and product details. Protect printed surfaces from rubbing and do not expose art prints to UV-C sanitation lighting.
