Why Print Shop Should Not Print AI-Generated Art?
Artists are Already Losing Work and Income
The economic impact of generative AI is international,
although it is not developing at the same rate in every market. Studies from the United Kingdom, Japan, and the United States examine different populations and use different methods, so their percentages should not be treated as directly comparable.
The responsible conclusion is that creators in multiple countries are already reporting lost commissions and reduced income, while broader labor-market pressure is beginning to appear elsewhere.
In the United Kingdom
, a 2024 Society of Authors survey received 787 responses from members and other creative professionals. Among the illustrators who responded, 26% said they had already lost work because of generative AI, while 37% said the income from their work had decreased in value (SoA Policy Team, 2024). These are reported experiences among survey respondents, not an estimate for every UK illustrator, but they are direct evidence that some working artists are already being displaced or underpaid.
In Japan,
the Japan Freelance League surveyed 24,991 freelance creators between September and October 2025. Illustrators, manga artists, and animators accounted for 71.3% of respondents. Overall, 12% reported that their income or sales had decreased because of generative AI, including 2.7% who reported a substantial decrease. Another 10.8% said they had chosen to seek income outside creative work (Japan Freelance League, 2026). Because participation was voluntary, the findings should not be presented as a nationwide prevalence rate. Even so, the scale of the response shows measurable economic and career consequences among Japanese creators.
The United States
presents a more cautious picture. Makridis (2026) examined federal employment and earnings data for artistic occupations from 2017 through 2024. The study found little evidence of a broad short-term earnings decline associated with AI exposure through 2023, but some models showed weaker employment growth in more-exposed artistic occupations. The study covered broad categories of artists and excluded designers, so it does not establish that American illustrators as a group have already suffered the same losses reported in the UK and Japan. It does suggest an early reallocation of work that deserves continued scrutiny.
Decreased Creative Content Value
Research supports a more nuanced concern than simply saying that every AI-generated image is “bad.” Zhou and Lee (2024) studied more than four million artworks posted by over 50,000 users. Text-to-image AI has increased output and peer approval, and the most novel concepts occasionally became more adventurous. At the same time, average content novelty declined, while both average and peak visual novelty decreased. The authors warned that widespread adoption of text-to-image AI could fill creative fields with increasingly generic content if exploration narrows and familiar visual patterns reinforce themselves.
That distinction matters. AI may help a skilled person explore or prototype, but mass-generated output can also reward recognizable formulas, imitate established aesthetics, and flood attention channels faster than human artists can respond. A market full of technically competent images can still become culturally thinner. The proper concern is not that machines can never produce an appealing picture; it is that appearance alone should not replace authorship, context, and craft.
Print Shops and Manufacturers Must Take Responsibility
Print businesses choose which products to manufacture, set file and quality requirements, advise customers, verify editions, and turn digital material into saleable physical objects. That role carries responsibility.
The print industry already makes ethical decisions about paper sourcing, hazardous materials, working conditions, counterfeit goods, and intellectual-property risk. The origin of the image should be part of the same conversation. When a manufacturer prints and finishes a work, it gives that work physical permanence, commercial utility, and a degree of legitimacy.
Saying “we only pressed the button” is not a ethical standard for a printing and manufacturing industry.
Taking a position also gives customers clarity. Artists should know whether their production partner supports human creative labor. Collectors should know what kind of object they are buying. Staff should have a consistent procedure instead of improvising when questionable work arrives. A public policy turns values into an accountable business practice.
